I’ve not weeded through any books the past little while because I’ve been in Paris for a week. However, today I selected 12 books dealing with writing for discarding. I have quite a few books on the subject. I think all one really needs are “The First Five Pages” by Noah Lukeman and “78 Reasons Why Your Book May Never Be Published & 14 Reasons Why It Just Might” by Pat Walsh. Most of these books are just like new and those that aren’t are still in very good condition. I have read all of them, they are, for me, not keepers.

I love science books, or, more specifically, any books that explain the world around me. I find older knowledge books have a wonderful self-assuredness about them – bordering on smugness. From You and Atomic Energy: Big airplanes or ships, using an atomic furnace for power could carry enough fuel to keep running for a hundred years. But, of course, there would be no purpose in carrying so much fuel. Because that would just be ostentatious. As the book reassures us, atomic energy is as safe as gasoline (click to view larger and readable image): These books date from 1949 (You and Atomic Energy) through to 1965 (You and Relativity).

These are 40+ years old and incomplete encyclopaedia set. I’ve kept them because I like seeing how the knowledge has changed over the years and also because I thought that, even if they were pretty much useless, they could be a source of pictures for the kids for use in school projects. All the images we need, we just pull off the Internet. Looking up stuff in books is very old school. I likely picked them up cheap at some school or church bazaar. There are four books in each image (click for a larger image).
