In Northern Canada, the various aboriginal people build stone structures called Inukshuk (literally “person stand-in”). They are made from unworked stone and are generally arranged to look something like a person. They serve as markers in the tundra (which is an extremely featureless place): they may serve indicate a way point, identify a cache of food / tools / shelter / etc, or simply serve as a reminder that someone once passed this way.

Instead of using rocks (which are so-o-o-o-o primitive civilization) I have updated to using materials likely to be found in any modern, progressive, Western home.

I have passed this way and left this as witness.”

I was looking for a more universal look. I was trying to make a statement wiht garbage - that the piles of garbage we create are the Inukshuk of modernity.

Made me think about one of your posts a while back where you were commenting on the expense of foodstuff getting to Northerners. Milk being a spoilable commodity. Interestingly, in Spain, people almost exclusively drink UHT milk. Fresh milk is uncommon and costs 2-3 times what the boxed milk does. I pay 0.54 for a litre of milk. Fresh is almost always over 1 euro. Getting milk to the Northern aborigines should not be an issue in Canada.

Interesting... I never thought of that Tim Hortons cup thrown out the car window as a landmark that he might be using to find his way back home :)

UHT milk...does it come in cans?

The Northern issue...I think there are just a lot of people who have built careers around no solutions being found. It's kind of like what's happened with the healthcare industry -- chronic care rather than cures are more profitable. Send powdered milk up North -- less weight for the plane and a long shelf life. Add water when you get there... it's not difficult! It's not clever, either... so someone doesn't want it to happen.

Nope, the milk comes in tetra packs. A lot of propaganda about how tetra packs are incredibly environmentally friendly.

at the very least, you should have set out the ingredients for a good pizza.
a hundred years from now, when cockaroaches take over the world, and they will,
your pizza 'marker' might save civilization from a diet of only spirulina and broccoli.
reflect upon how tragic the world would be henceforth-- sans pizza and beer.

I have great faith that humans will be here 100 years hence. We are a particularily tenacious lot. Of course, this is by no means any intimation that humans shall in any way be nobler - they'll just be the same.

Thank you! They are actually quite pretty. I saw a lot of Inukshuk symbols during the Winter Olympic games that just passed.

Yes, there is advertising. The web hosting costs $5.95 per month and the domain name $10.45 per year (plus applicable taxes). Hopefully, the ads will, over the course of a year, pay for the cost of the website.
